Photosynthesising algae become embodied carbon which sinks to the ocean floor as marine snow. This deep sea carbon is the bodies of dead algae, something science is only just beginning to understand. Viruses play an important role in killing off blooms of algae, so this atmospheric carbon can become deep sea carbon.
