Coccolithospheres are tiny, photosynthetic plankton with calcium carbonate outer casings. They are ancient organisms who create immense amounts of oxygen that is released into the atmosphere. They are also what creates the immense limestone cliffs around the world, deep time accumulations of coccolithosphere populations.

These plankton are also having a hard time with ocean acidification, as the ocean absorbs large amounts of carbon dioxide. This then means that carbon doesn’t get absorbed into the bodies of these important plant beings.
